Stevia is a South American plant that has been used for ages as a sweetener by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay. The leaves of the small, green Stevia rebaudiana herb, commonly known as sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf, or simply stevia, have a refreshing and delicious taste that can be 30 times sweeter than sugar.
Unadulterated Stevia products can be safely used by both hypoglycemics and diabetics.
Some Stevia extracts may have a bitter or licorice-like aftertaste at high concentrations. The higher the content of 'Rebaudioside A', the lower the bitterness.
The MayoClinic stresses that the FDA doesn't recognize the whole plant as being safe, but only highly refined stevia extractions which by itself still could cause nausea or a fullness feeling.
